Vein Removal Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are groups of dilated veins or blood vessels that appear as small red and purple “squiggly” lines near the surface of your skin. Spider veins are typically found on the legs and face and, while not dangerous, are considered a blemish.

The causes of spider veins include:

  • Heredity
  • Excessive standing
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Trauma to the skin

How does laser therapy work on spider veins?

To combat spider veins, Park Slope Laser Aesthetic Center uses the Elite+®, a high-powered, dual-wavelength system that delivers energy faster than typical laser therapies, which means you spend less time getting treated.

The Elite+ system works by constricting the blood vessels in your legs or face, causing the spider veins to disappear. Miriam Azizy at Park Slope Laser Aesthetic Center is fully certified in the use of the Elite+ and can successfully treat your spider veins quickly and effectively.

How long does the laser therapy take?

Typically, laser treatments last 30 minutes and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately after your appointment with no downtime.

The frequency of treatments will depend on the number and location of your spider veins. If you have numerous locations of spider veins you’d like to have treated, you may need several treatments.

Mariam Azizy will sit down and review your case with you, and come up with a plan that best fits your situation.

Are there side effects with laser therapy?

The clear advantage of laser therapy, or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, using the Elite+ system, is that the procedure is noninvasive, avoiding the risks often associated with surgical interventions, such as infections. The therapy is also highly targeted, using dedicated wavelengths that only treat spider veins, without damaging healthy skin and tissue in the same area.

You may experience some redness and swelling at the immediate site of treatment, but these usually subside after a day or two.
