Personalized Tear-Trough Treatment for Under-Eye Hollowness
Under-eye hollows can create shadows that make the face appear tired even when a person is well rested. In appropriately selected patients, hyaluronic acid filler may be used to improve volume deficiency in the tear-trough or infraorbital area.
Under-eye filler is a medical injectable procedure. It is not appropriate for every type of dark circle, under-eye bag or lower-eyelid concern.
At Park Slope Laser Aesthetic Center in Brooklyn, treatment begins with an evaluation of the patient’s anatomy, skin quality, areas of volume loss, previous procedures, medical history and aesthetic goals.
What Is Under-Eye Filler?
Under-eye filler treatment involves placing an appropriate injectable filler into carefully selected areas beneath or around the lower eyelid.
The goal is generally to improve visible hollowness and create a smoother transition between the lower eyelid and upper cheek.
Under-eye filler may be considered for selected patients with:
- Tear-trough hollowness
- Infraorbital volume deficiency
- A shadow caused primarily by loss of volume
- An uneven transition between the lower eyelid and cheek
- Age-related or naturally occurring under-eye hollows
Treatment should be conservative and individualized because the skin around the eyes is thin and the anatomy is complex. Learn more about dermal filler options.
Can Under-Eye Filler Correct Dark Circles?
Sometimes—but only when the dark appearance is primarily caused by a shadow from under-eye hollowness.
Dark circles can also result from:
- Skin pigmentation
- Visible blood vessels
- Thin or translucent skin
- Lower-eyelid fat pads
- Puffiness or fluid retention
- Allergies
- Skin irritation
- Facial anatomy
- A combination of several factors
Filler does not directly remove pigment, treat visible blood vessels or eliminate every cause of dark circles. Read more about the causes of dark circles.
If prominent bags, fluid retention or skin laxity are the primary concern, filler may provide limited benefit or may make the area appear heavier. Another treatment or medical evaluation may be more appropriate.
Which Fillers Can Be Used Under the Eyes?
Certain hyaluronic acid fillers have FDA-approved indications for improving infraorbital hollowness in appropriate adults. Other products may have different approved indications.
The product should be selected according to:
- The patient’s anatomy
- Degree of hollowness
- Skin thickness
- Lower-eyelid support
- Presence of puffiness or fat pads
